Pantone's Color of the Year annoucement has us seeing double

Pantone's Color of the Year annoucement has us seeing double

After a year of rich palettes featuring the beloved burgundy wine toned Marsala, Pantone is taking color in a fresh direction with not one, but two Colors of the Year for 2016. Both shades are soft pastel tones in a nod to the rapidly evolving concept of gender in today’s fashion and culture: pale pink and baby blue.

The colors, a warm blush pink called Rose Quartz and a powdery blue named Serenity, are meant to be a calming departure from previous years’ heavy jewel tones. The Color Institute insists that the colors are meant to be blended, stating that the combination “challenges traditional perceptions of color association”.

We expect to see these colors translate well into jewelry trends in the coming year, converging with the statement wear trend to offer big looks in barely-there hues. While pale pink stones like rose quartz, morganite, and peach sapphire and pale blue stones like chalcedony and aquamarine fit the literal bill, we may also see more subtle minimalist incarnations such as rose gold and diamond, crystal, or white topaz.

To bring the colors into your wardrobe, Pantone suggests palettes with greens, pinks, yellows, and rich browns. Personally, we like the edge the hues get when paired with deep neutrals: charcoal, navy, slate—and soft, warm greys. Even a dash of purple, deep and toned down, would work wonders with Rose Quartz; a sandy linen tan hue would also work to keep an ensemble fresh and light.
